Survey of Parent Awareness and Parent Behavior Concerning the Use of Digital Games by Children
In this survey, “digital game” refers to video games, PC games, and smartphone and other mobile device games.
Purpose of survey
Conventional concepts
Deep-rooted opposition to use of video games by children with strong criticism of video game imagery, particularly violence, as having a negative impact on society.
Decline in number of parents who have never personally played video games and in parents with concerns about allowing children to play video games.
Current environment
Rating system in place that assigns ratings to video game software indicating recommended age of use based on video game content or game imagery.
The generation of people who played video games during their youth are now becoming parents, resulting in households where the parent plays digital games together with the child.
Considering these social changes, we surveyed the state of parental awareness concerning the use of digital games by children and subsequent parental behavior.
For this study, we conducted a survey of parental awareness concerning the use of digital games by children.
Survey targets
We surveyed 1000 parents living in Japan with children age 3 to age 18.
Main findings
Use of games by children
61.8% of children had played a digital game within the past year. By age, this was 40.5% for preschool age children, 62.0% for first through third grade children, 74.6% for fourth through sixth grade children, 67.3% for middle school age children, and 64.5% for high school children (refer to Table Q9 for details).
Regarding to what level parents are aware of how frequent their children use games, among parents whose children play games, 14.4% responded “I have no idea”, 67.0% responded “I have some idea”, and 18.6% responded “I know precisely” (refer to Table Q10 for details).
For school days, many responded to a period of use of one hour or less and for non-school days, many responded to a period of use of two hours or less (refer to Table Q11 for details).
